The History of Software

I came across this link recently.

It outlines major events in the history of software. It really is stageering to consider how far and how fast we have come in such a short period of time. It really is exciting to be a part of this industry and experience just how awesome it can impact the world. I expect that we’ll a direct brain interface before too long.  Wouldn’t be cool to have access to all the knowledge of the internet just by thinking about it.

Pretty cool that a sight like this recognized the world’s best fitness club management software too!

How to Be Great at Gym Membership Sales

Great article in this month’s Club Insider written by Jim Thomas.  If you don’t know Jim, trust me, he knows what he is talking about.

Here’s his list:

1.  You must be sold yourself.  If you don’t genuinely believe that your’s is the best gym, you won’t be as effective selling it.  When managing your sales team, alwasy reinforce the mantra that your gym is the best.

2.  Passion.  Belief.  Conviction.

3.  Be unreasonable.  Refuse be swayed by any excuse not to join your gym.

4.  If you’re not hitting your numbers, you’re not sold.

5.  If YOU have excuses, you’re not sold.  ”We’re too expensive”, “this is a slow time of year.”  Get those out of your head.

6.  The most important sale you will ever make is to yourself.

7.  The idea of you being sold must be 100% and you must work at it.

Seems to be a common theme here – be convinced in your product/your gym.

After almost 20 years in the fitness business developing and selling the best fitness club management software in the world, we’ve met and spoken with literally thousands and thousands of fitness club owners around the world.  There is a litany of advice and perspective we’ve gained in this process.  Probably the most important is to close the sale when the prospect is in your club.  If your marketing efforts are working, prospects will visit your club to see if they want to join.  That is the time to close the sale.  The minute that prospect walks out the door, the likelihood of closing that sale just dropped by 80%.  Really.

So believe in your gym.  Sell yourself on your gym.  And don’t let that prospect walk out the door without joining your gym!

Club Industry 2014 Vendor Fair

I tried to shoot a video walkthrough of the vendor fair at last weeks Club Industry Show in Chicago.

My memory card maxed out so I only covered about half of it.

In short, there were great vendors there, which can be a terrific value-add for fitness club owners wanting to evaluate different products for their fitness club.

Club Industry is no IHRSA, however.  While it has a good sampling of vendors, the mack daddy of all trade shows is IHRSA (In LA this March); its waaaaay bigger and has many more vendors (at least 10 times as many).  If you can’t make that, then Club Industry will do.

United Kingdom Curves Franchise Ball

I recently returned from attending the Curves Franchisee Ball in Brighton, England. In all my experiences with Curves over the years, I think I was most impressed by this event over all others. It wasn’t the biggest and certainly not the most extravagant event. However, this was entirely coordinated by volunteers who received no compensation or funding from Curves Int’l. There were about 100 people in attendance at the Hilton in Brighton. The United Kingdom Franchise co-op had arranged a vendor exposition, of which Go Figure was a part of, small group break-out sessions with two facilitators per group, general sessions with great speakers with a well organized agenda, and an evening ball complete with awards, motivational speeches and recognition of members who shared their personal success stories. This entire event and the organization of it was fueled solely by the owner’s passion for Curves. I was moved by the event and honored to be a part of it. Kudos to the 2007 winner of the Curves Co-op of the year… you all continue to prove why you deserved that award.

Senior Citizen Centers using iGo Figure

More and more senior citizen centers have taken an interest in the iGo Figure software as a means to track and manage usage of their fitness center facilities. Ease-of-use, cost, great training and support have been cited as the deciding factors when evaluating possible software solutions.

I just returned from training over 100 new users if the iGo Figure software in London last week. It was a lot of fun and the attendees were very appreciative for the event. It was also exciting to train on our newest version (3.6) which will be available in a few weeks. New and existing users alike were very happy to see features such as:

  • Profile-based security
  • Web-based scheduler
  • Session based memberships
  • Email Member Retention program

There are more new features than that coming in this version, but those were the only ones I had time to showcase.
